Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)

today i had a maintenance checked on my Yamaha Snipers Throttle Position Sensor (TPS).

i verified the test procedure of TPS with the service manual
and it seems theres a discrepancy.

i need your help guys.

can you please confirm if the color coding of the TPS in your bike is

(from top to bottom)
*Yellow
*Blue
*Black/Blue

see pictures for details

your post will really help correct the error (if theres any) in the service manual.

the discrepancy is the test procedure as stated in the service manual both
in the downloaded file and the service manual book in yamaha dealer gives different result in real
test.

the result is somewhat interchanged.

In service manual chapter 6:11

CHECKING THE TPS


Connect the pocket tester (DC20V) to the terminals of the throttle position sensor.

Positive (+) pocket tester probe → yellow terminal 3
Negative (-) pocket tester probe →black/blue terminal 2

service manual states the result should be:
Throttle position sensor input voltage 5V at 20 °C

but when tested the result is around 0.4v

ADJUSTING THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR

Positive (+) digital circuit tester probe → blue terminal
Negative (-) digital circuit tester probe →yellow terminal

service manual states the result should be:
Throttle position sensor voltage 0.5 V

But when tested the result is around 3v to 4.5v
depending on the angle set on tps.

with the above results, i would like to check if the color coding
of tps wires in your bike is from top

YELLOW
BLUE
BLACKBLUE


Guys please check the color coding of your bikes tps just to confirm
if wiring has been mixedup or its the service manual is mixed up.

same problem i encountered before when i tested my TPS...but try to connect the TPS wire then test it bro, you'll get what is in the manual...use a pin to connect to the wire. ride safe

you have same color coding yello, blue, blackblue?

also can you get exact 5volts and exact 0.5volts?

because in my TPS i cannot get the above value even if i change the degree.

yes bro i can get the values. make sure the tps wire is connected to the tps and the ignition is switched on...i think you disconnected the plug of the tps while testing?

guys..im really sorry.. but i dont understand this..can u elaborate this...what's a Throttle position sensor for?...what its importance...?what will happen if u ignore this thing

What is TPS ?

Bro heres my analogy

WHAT IS TPS?
TPS or throttle position sensor is a sensor that is installed in the carburetor. open the fairing of the top of the carb
and you will see the tps.

Thru this sensor, The CDI will know the position of your throttle.
is it in full throttle?, the TPS will send signal to cdi
is it in 1/2 throttle or idle position ? the TPS will send signal to cdi.

The CDI needs the signal from tps so that the cdi will give the best best settings for the ignition timing to provide best power of your bike.

EXAMPLE (note: This is just simple analogy to show whats the use of TPS)


No TPS: Your on flat road, 100 kilos passenger, full throttle.
the cdi says: This is my settings, this is what i was designed for. i will just give this same settings.
besides i dont know whats happening outside.


No TPS: Going Uphill or mountain, 100 kilos passenger, full throttle.
the cdi says: This is my settings, hmm... im wondering whats happening outside? Is my settings correct? ahh forget it, i dont know whats going on outside so ill just give this same settings regardless whats happening outside. I dont care!!!


WITH TPS: Your on flat road, 100 kilos passenger, full throttle.

cdi says: ohh im already in full throttle, the rpm is high, i believe we are on a flat road because its full throttle and the rpm is also high.
The driver is speedmaniac!, ok, you are speedmaniac, I will give the best settings thats designed for top speed.


WITH TPS: Going Uphill or mountain, 100 kilos passenger, full throttle.

cdi says: ohh my , The throttle is full but the rpm is low... hmm.... why is that? probably its going uphill or we are going to a mountain, ok with that i will use the best settings for going uphill.

if youve noticed, most of the special bikes, high performance bikes have TPS. example of that are bigbikes, and motocross bikes who needs GOOD power at all powerbands.


In summary:

TPS is the eyes of your cdi. it will show the cdi whats happening outside.


Hope you understand my comics style of explanation...

The TPS supply information on the throttle opening position to cdi so that cdi can vary the ignition timing only?

correct bro.

the TPS signal is needed so that the cdi will provide the best ignition timing
for the specific rpm and throttle position.

that is 3D ignition map: (throttle position, RPM, Ignition Timing)

Upon careful study with the electrical diagrams of lc135, i found out that there is something at 3rd gear that the cdi unit start to change a setting or perhaps switches on something like an advance in timing or an rpm cut off? and this is started when shifting at 3rd gear, I dont know what this really means because I dont have the diagram of the cdi itself.
Trax, dont worry about your tps, if it has been mix up, it wont work and you will have blinking light.

post the pics of the diagram you mentioned.


their is a mixedup with the values in the service manual.
whats stated in the service manual regarding TPS checking/adjusting is wrong.

i will update the service manual with correct setting/checkup of TPS soon..

anyway, the TPS adjustment is ok now. thanks to rextor.
it has TPS tuner :)

Sorry, I do not know how to post files. But I guess you have the electrical diagram at hand. Look at the no. 33 at the bottom left. That is the neutral switch and the gears switch. There are individual switches inside to indicate position. Slightly above are nos. from 37,38,39,40,41-are neutral to 4th gear indicator lights.
Now look at the line of no. 39 (3rd gear), there is a line connected going to the cdi (trace the line) in actual form it is colored pink in the wiring in harness of cdi. Now, you may ask, what that wire doing there, why only on third gear? I really dont know the answer but I assume it signals the cdi to start or change a setting or anything, I just dont know as i've said because I do not have the cdi diagram. HTH.

hii.. the pink wire comes from the 2nd gear.. its function is to switch ignition mapping for maximum torque because 2nd gear is the common position when we accel.. after switch to 3rd gear it becomes normal again..

Haen is right, my mistake, it is on 2nd gear. Are you sure it returns to normal at 3rd gear? what if i try to remove this wire? what will happen with performance?
