Rossi much more satisfied after qualifying
After encountering some issues with rear grip in free practice, Fiat Yamaha rider Valentino Rossi was far happier following Saturday’s qualifying session for the Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar.
The Italian, who starts the defence of his MotoGP World Championship title at the Losail International Circuit in Sunday’s race, made some set-up changes to his factory M1 prototype following Friday’s practice.
The modifications paid off as he set the second fastest time in qualifying on Saturday evening, finding an improved feeling with the rear of his bike which consequently led to a better race pace.
"I'm really happy about the work we've done today on our set-up and now we have a good race pace with the hard Bridgestone tyres,” said the 31 year-old, who was 0.355s off pole position holder Casey Stoner. “With the soft one the rear is still sliding a little bit too much, but I think for the race we are okay.”
He continued: “My final flying lap was very fast but then I had to pass a couple of riders in the final sector and I lost some time, but anyway we have a good grid position so I am happy. A strong start is going to be very important and we will have to push hard on the first lap to try to stay close to Stoner, who is always very strong here. Honestly I think it will be tough to beat him but we will try our best!"
